Bas Coffee Plantation Tempak Sering

Tucked away on the roadside of Seri Batu, on the way to Kintamani, we find Bas Coffee Plantation. A fantastic spot high up in the mountains, Bas coffee plantation is also a pit stop for those passing by on a cycling track. Neville and Melissa got to taste one of Bali’s finest home grown coffee as well as a lesson through the hand picked process.

The fruit of the coffee plant is red when it is ripe which usually takes around 9 months. Inside each fruit are two coffee beans. The interesting thing about coffee is that the caffeine that we harvest from the plant for our pleasure is the plant’s natural defense mechanism against disease.

There are 2 main forms of coffee, Arabica considered the superior coffee, and Robusta which tends to finish up as instant coffees. Bas coffee plantation grows and cultivates their own Arabica coffee.

Wayan the owner of the plantation walks the team through the process.

  • First the berries are pounded to break up the soft flesh
  • The resulting mash is then dried for 10 days
  • It then goes through a second pounding to reduce the fruit remnants into dust
  • The beans are separated out by willowing
  • The superior light colored beans are hand picked from the darker ones
  • The beans are roasted in a hot wok for 45 minutes until they turn into a dark brown colour

Another interesting fact about this universally loved drink is that goats were supposed to have discovered coffee, as they were observed to have hyperactive behavior after devouring the berries from a coffee tree by Arabians.
