Dawson City
Story Title: Dawson City
Dawson City is a gold mining town with a rich history of authors, debauchery, adventure and nightlife. It's a town you don’t want to miss visiting when you’re in the Yukon, Canada.
Stepping Back in Time
- In August 1896, gold was found in Bonanza Creek (formerly Rabbit Creek) and this sparked the Klondike gold rush that saw the town’s numbers swell to 30,000 people within a year. Gold mining is still practiced around Dawson City, but the town itself has become frozen in time, with the buildings restored as a tribute to the ‘heyday’ of gold mining.
- Today you can pan for your own gold at Claim # 6
- Diamond Tooth Gerties is a not-for-profit casino, with all proceeds being put back into the community. The casino got its name from the dancer Diamond Tooth Gertie who wanted to stand out from the other cancan dancers in the early 1900’s; she did so by wedging a diamond in her tooth and the casino is now named after her.
- The strangest tradition you’ll find in Dawson City is the Sourtoe Cocktail Club established in 1973. Visitors who wish to join the Sourtoe Cocktail Club must drink a beverage that contains a dehydrated human toe. The saying goes: ‘You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but your lips have got to touch the toe’.
